The Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple at Tirumala, near Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, is the most-visited temple in India and one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world. Perched on the seven hills of Tirumala, it draws tens of thousands of pilgrims every single day for the darshan of Lord Venkateswara (Balaji).

A first visit can feel overwhelming — the queues, the darshan categories, the booking portal. This guide lays out what you need, using only what we can confirm from the official TTD sources.

Darshan types — which queue is which

  • Sarva Darshanam (free) — the general darshan through the Vaikuntam Queue Complex. No ticket, but waits can be long, especially at peak times.
  • Special Entry Darshan (Seeghra Darshan) — a paid, fast-track darshan, booked online in advance on the official TTD portal (introduced in 2009, with advance booking since 2014).
  • Divya Darshan (free) — priority darshan for pilgrims who climb up on foot via the Alipiri or Srivari footpaths; tokens are issued on the way up.
  • Special darshan for senior citizens and differently-abled pilgrims (free) — held Monday–Saturday at 3:00 PM, with only a spouse allowed as an attendant.

How booking works

Special Entry Darshan, accommodation and most sevas are booked on the official TTD portal (ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in) or the TTD app. The online quota is released well in advance and popular dates fill up quickly, so plan early.

Carry the government photo ID (Aadhaar) used at the time of booking — biometric / photo verification applies at reporting. Traditional dress is expected, especially for the Special Entry Darshan.

The Tirupati laddu

The Tirupati laddu is a Geographical-Indication (GI) product — that tag was granted in 2009 — and it is made by TTD at Tirumala. Only the official TTD counters (and the official portal) sell the genuine laddu; shops in the town below sell imitations.

Every darshan ticket entitles you to a laddu after darshan, with a limited number more available to purchase per ticket.

How to reach Tirumala

  • By road: Tirumala is about 22 km up a ghat road from Tirupati town — roughly an hour’s drive.
  • On foot: two stepped footpaths — the longer Alipiri Mettu (~3,550 steps) and the shorter Srivari Mettu. Foot pilgrims get the free Divya Darshan.
  • Nearest airport: Tirupati (Renigunta). Nearest railhead: Tirupati station.
  • By distance: Chennai is roughly 135–150 km and Bengaluru roughly 230–250 km — both comfortable road or rail approaches.

Best time to visit

The temple is busy year-round, but the biggest crowds fall around Vaikunta Ekadasi, the nine-day Brahmotsavam festival, New Year and long weekends — when Sarva Darshan waits are longest.

For an easier darshan, avoid those peaks, book a Special Entry Darshan in advance, and aim for an early-morning or late-night slot.
