On the island of Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu stands the Ramanathaswamy Temple — the southernmost of the twelve Jyotirlingas, and by tradition the place where Lord Rama worshipped Shiva. It is a temple of superlatives, and a cornerstone of the Char Dham pilgrimage.

What makes it special

  • One of the 12 Jyotirlingas — the southernmost of them.
  • The 22 theerthams — 22 sacred water bodies inside the temple, associated with the 22 arrows of Rama; pilgrims take a ritual bath drawn from each well.
  • The longest temple corridor in India — its outer corridor runs around 3,850 feet, lined with over a thousand carved pillars.
  • Agni Theertham — the Bay of Bengal shoreline where pilgrims take the sea bath before entering the temple.

Planning your darshan

The custom is to take the Agni Theertham sea bath first, then the ritual bath from the 22 theerthams inside, before the darshan of the Jyotirlinga. Carry a change of clothes, and check the current temple timings locally.
